Ride elephants in Thailand: Damnoen Saduak

An hour-drive from Bangkok is Damnoen Saduak where there are elephants that you can ride in Thailand.

This is our (me and my mom) second time in Thailand but the first time we weren't able to see and ride an elephant so we were all very excited.

When we arrived, I felt the heat when I stepped out of the van. Since we were away from Bangkok city, the weather was really warmer.

There are directions in English in case you get lost.

BTW, Damnoen Saduak  is a district in central Thailand in the province Ratchaburi. The central town is most famous because of its floating market held every day till noon on a khlong not far from the district office.  (Wikipedia)

An elephant ride costs 1000 Baht or 20 USD per person. Although it's not that affordable, I think riding an elephant safely is something worth paying for.

While waiting for our tickets, we stayed at the seats in the souvenir shops section.

I still feel a little scared seeing a big animal such as an elephant but the elephant was calm and seemed such a gentle creature.

Elephant driver

Our elephant driver was a kind and hardworking man. He also sells some pearl accessories and my mom bought a bracelet from him because it was a cute bracelet and he was kind. He even complimented that Filipino women are beautiful and we were happy to hear that.

Watch the short clip of our elephant above. The ride took like around 10 minutes or so. We were amazed at how trained the elephant was.

Some tips to make your elephant ride more comfortable:
  • If you want to visit the elephants and ride one, you can maximize your money by joining a group tour that you can arrange with your hotel or the place you're staying in. They can refer you to agencies who give you a good package with an affordable price.
  • Prepare for the heat. Wear something light-  preferably cotton material clothes. Bring something to cover you from the sun because it's really hot - sunglasses, any cap, pashmina (or anything like this), towel/handkerchief and bottle of water.

For me, it was a fresh and exciting experience to ride an elephant while viewing the rural neighborhood in that area. It was really fun and memorable! Riding an elephant is a must-try when you visit Thailand.
