Binondo food trip

By Jamie - February 02, 2016

Well, I just posted about affordable Chinese restaurants here.  Since we went to Binondo last time last year where my friend treated us because it was her birthday, I thought I'd share some places to try in Chinatown.  It was much more cheaper to eat in Binondo and the food tastes authentically Chinese, in my opinion.

It was the first time for us to try eating in Chinatown so we were glad we had the chance.

We tried three food places that we read from blogs which had good reviews.  We went to Café Mezzanine. Dong Bei Dumplings, and Ying Ying Tea house.

Our first stop was Café Mezzanine. This restaurant is located on the second floor just above Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli.
Café Mezzanine interior, very spacious and clean.  This is located on the popular street which is Ongpin street

You will see this poster upon the entrance of the place.

Here's what we ate in Café Mezzanine:
Pancit canton
I think the canton was one of their best sellers.  You definitely can't go wrong with ordering canton when it comes to Chinese cuisine.  Well, you can see the generous amount of servings. Below, you can see their version of Xiao Long Bao.
Xiao Long Bao
Actually, it was the first time for many of us to eat this kind of dumpling.  It was really delicious. I think the difference of this was it had soup inside so when you bite it, it just becomes much more flavorful.  My friend ordered rice but I don't know what exactly it was but she said it was tasty.

Although we were full, we wanted to try the dumplings in Dong Bei Dumpling.  We had to walk to another street across where we were. It was hot since it was past 1 pm and I think we burned what we ate already in time for the dumplings.

Dong Bei Dumpling is located in 642 Yunchengco corner V. Tytana Street
As you can see, we waited a bit before we can come inside Dong Bei for there were customers eating before us.  The place was rather small so they can only occupy that much but it was worth the wait.  I had time to take a picture of the employees making the dumplings.

They have a big menu posted in the wall

The price range for the food was 90-270 pesos.  They have almost food price at 120 pesos which is good for sharing for a group like us.
Kuchay with pork dumplings - 120 pesos

This kuchay was really good. I really liked this kind of dumpling.  The meat mixed with vegetables had a great flavor.  We enjoyed this and this was priced to be affordable.

The Xiao lang bao was also good although I prefer the Xiao long bao of Café Mezzanine.

Fried sugar pancakes - 120 pesos

I really don't like sweet stuff like this so I think it depends on the person eating but this sweet pancake was okay.

Our second to the last stop actually was Ying Ying Tea House, a restaurant that offers a bigger menu.  We actually went to a place that sells fresh lumpia but I did not get to take pics of it.
Ying Ying is located on Dasmariñas St, Binondo
The pages pictured are just for their dimsum.

We ordered two sets of this seen in the pic below. It must say Ying Ying serves the best sharksfin dumpling I have ever tasted.
Sharksfin dumpling (75 pesos), hakaw(75 pesos), siopao 2 pcs. (70 pesos), and milk tea

Ying ying's dumplings are priced at 70-75 pesos per order which is affordable compared to the usual 100-150 pesos.

The total food bill was way cheaper compared to eating in Chinese restaurants in malls so it was very worth it.  If you want delicious and affordable Chinese food, do try these restaurants.
